Overview

Contaminated assets present a critical challenge during decommissioning, impacting safety, cost, schedule and recycling outcomes.

The Birdon Automated Decontamination Unit (ADU) provides a controlled, onshore solution to safely and efficiently remove contaminants from rigid pipelines, flowlines, tubulars, casing and subsea equipment, enabling downstream recycling and reuse.

Designed for high-volume processing, the remote-operated system can accommodate pipelines from 2½” to 12” ID and lengths up to 12.8 metres (42 ft), with simultaneous internal processing of two pipelines and repeatable, high-frequency cleaning cycles.

Birdon is also undertaking R&D to extend the unit’s processing capability to flexible flowlines.

KEY BENEFITS

The Automated Decontamination Unit provides an automated, fully contained process for cleaning recovered pipelines and equipment, from asset intake through to verified clean output. By integrating internal and external cleaning with controlled containment of contaminants, the system delivers significant benefits across safety, efficiency and material recovery.
  • Improved Safety

Removes personnel from line of fire during high-risk cleaning activities through fully automated operation.

  • Controlled Environment

Fully contained system to manage hazardous materials and prevent environmental exposure.

  • Increased Efficiency

High-throughput system designed for large-scale pipeline and tubular processing.

  • Enables recycling

Prepares assets for reuse, repurposing or material recovery.

Project Impact

  • Reduces risk at every stage

By removing personnel from the cleaning process and isolating
contamination within a controlled environment, the Birdon ADU significantly reduces HSE exposure across decommissioning operations.

  • Improves delivery certainty

Automation and consistent processing rates reduce variability, helping operators better forecast schedule, cost and required resources.

  • Unlocks recycling pathways

Effective internal and external decontamination enables inspection, segregation and reuse; supporting higher recovery rates.

  • Integrated into the decommissioning lifecycle

The Birdon ADU forms part of our end-to-end solution, supporting:

    • Offshore recovery and transport
    • Onshore processing and decontamination
    • Deconstruction and material recovery
    • Recycling and disposal pathways
